"My district nurse is excellent"

About: Rotherham PCT / District nursing Rotherham PCT / Tissue viability service

(as the patient),

I am bed ridden because I suffer with sever neuropathy ad therefore receive regular visits from the district nurses who are excellent. Today, the district nurse came to visit me because i am having trouble with my mattress. I do not have any bed sores at present, but, the mattress is causing me pain. They are now going to get someone else to come and evaluate the mattress.

The care that I receive from the district nurse is excellent. I have regular prescriptions for morphine from my GP, but for only 20 days. I need to then call and request some more medication. On their system this brings up a red flag because it shows that I have already had morphine for this month. we then have to go through the procedure of speaking with the doctor to get my medication. This happens every month, it would be much easier if I could just have a months supply and then reorder without all of this hassle. I rely so much on this medication.

Thank you for telling us about the issues you have re-ordering your prescription medication for morphine.

Unfortunately the National Patient Safety Agency recommends that certain medications such as morphine have close checks and measures. This is to ensure that patients remain safe and to reduce the potential of misuse, and inappropriate prescribing.

Unforuntately the national recommendations will prevent your GP practice making changes to the ordering process, and we are sorry that this process does cause you inconvenience.

Thank you once again for sharing your experiences.
