"Almost impossible to get any information"

About: University Hospital Lewisham

We raised few concerns about our 4 year old for possible autism and as a result went to get him assessed at Kaleidoscope after a wait of almost 6 months. The child specialist suggested speech test and audiology for my son which we got done and result seems good. We waiting for his further assessment and when we didn't heard back for last 3-4 months, we tried to get an appointment at Kaleidoscope. Its been a month since I call them 2-3 times a week and all I get is someone's voice mail. I have recorded numerous voice mails in hope that someone will call me back to discuss what is next for my son's assessment. However, nothing happened for last one month. The reception seem to have no clue as to who to connect me with and as a result, I've voice mailed probably all the doctor's assistants. I understand that ASD assessment takes time, but it would be nice to get some information/assurance about what is the next plan of action for my boy. As a parent, its very frustrating to keep on waiting for his full assessment so that we can plan our next course of action to enable him to live his live normally.

The parent/carer of each child booked for an appointment with the paediatric team is phoned to confirm an appointment when their child comes to the top of our long waiting list. An appointment letter is then sent and a reminder text sent the week before the appointment.

If a child is to be seen within the communication setting the appointment is usually with a specialist clinician and specialist speech and language therapist the appointment takes about 2 and a half hours.

You confirm that your child has had both speech and language therapy and an audiology assessment. We would also ask for nursery/school to complete one of our questionnaires near to the appointment time.

There is a long waiting list for the communication clinic but if there are concerns at school / child not attending school / aggressive behaviour etc we obviously try to prioritise these assessments.

Please accept our apologies for the delay.

Kind regards
