"Good service but very long wait for children's A&E"

About: Royal Preston Hospital

Had to take a 5 year-old to A&E for a bump to the head, which in the end only needed cleaning and a steri-strip. The service we received was good, but the wait was over 4 hours. The children's A&E needs better signage to show that the entrance is the same as adult A&E (door opens so you can't see sign). There's no way to know how long you're going to have to wait and you can't hear the staff when they call you to see a member of staff. The children's A&E is fairly clean and segregated, but there are not enough seats and the children's area is devoid of toys, books or any real kind of distraction. A TV would work miracles. Next time I might think twice about going - I might have got a better service over the phone or via pharmacist and doing first-aid myself.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us of your recent experience when you attended the Emergency Department with your child. Whilst it was pleasing to hear that the clinical care your child received was good, we were sorry to hear that you had to wait for over 4 hours to be treated. Your constructive comments about the environment have been shared with senior staff in the Emergency Department and the Facillities Directorate.
