"it's quite near to my home ..."

About: Hinchingbrooke Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

it's quite near to my home in Chatteris

What could be improved

Just about everything! I took my 2 year old son to A and E as he had a severe cut on his temple, which had beld for 3 hours and was showing bone. Although he had not lost consciousness, he was very distressed and it obviosuly needed attention. My son was told to be seated. No Triage nurse assessed him, and after 4 complaints and speaking to the reception, we left and went to Addenbrooks hospital instead, where he was immediately assessed and taken to have his head glued back together.

Anything else?

I am honestly completely shocked that a hospital left a CHILD with a HEAD INJURY sitting with no attention for so long and despite complaints. People went in and were seen with minor sprains before we left in disgust and with some concern, as my son had become tired and listless. Luckily, Addenbrooks knew what the score was. I shall be writing a formal letter of complaint. Had my son been one of the unfortunates who die from such wounds, Hinchingbrook would have been culpable. I will certainly drive the extra distance to Cambridge from now on. Disgusting.

‘Firstly, we are very sorry to hear of your experience in our A&E department recently and thank you for contacting us and our Patient Advice and Liaison Service to enable us to discuss this with you directly. Whilst I understand that one of our Senior Nurses saw you and your son in the waiting room at the time of your visit to discuss the delay, we do appreciate that on this occasion we let you down. Please be assured that we are taking necessary action to ensure that this doesn’t happen in the future.’
