I have been in and out of QMC over the last few weeks. Having had surgery at another hospital my wound reopened and QMC was the nearest a&E. I went along to the ED dept and had absolutely wonderful care from the nurses and Drs there. They saw me promptly and were all understanding and kind.

I was then moved to gyne on a trolley where I had to wait 3 hours to see a junior Dr and a reg. both Drs were professional and kind. The delay was due to the fact that there were other patients who were more unwell which is completely understandable.

After 7 hours on a trolley I was finally admitted to a bed at 3am. The next day I was seen by a consultant and a nurse. The came in, didnt introduce themselves and commenced on pulling off my dressing and discussing it between themselves. This was not acceptable. I told the consultant I didnt want a general anesthetic to suture the relatively superficial wound, they said they wouldnt do surgery without ot, there fore I asked to have the wound healed via dressings. The consultant left. an hour later another consultant came and introduced themself and the team they were with, asked to look at the wound and discussed the options treating me like a person with a wound rather than a wound with a person attached.

I explained I would rather have it sutured but didnt want an anaesthetic or a spinal as I felt the risks were too high for a minor procedure. The consultant explained why they wouldn't want to do it under a local. However once the consultant was assured that I knew of all the pitfalls of having the procedure under local they were happy to try it under the proviso that if i felt discomfort they would stop and I would have a anesthetic. I readily agreed to this compromise as it was more than reasonable.

The surgery was carried out in theaters under local and went well with 7 stitches being placed. Unfortunately after the sutures were removed a week later the wound opened up again although it was smaller. I went back to gyne. Was seen by a consultant who refused suturing. At first I didnt agree but on reflection felt their advice of healing the wound with dressing was better than more surgery (especially as they point blank refused to operate under local).

The gyne nurses dressed my wound the day after following a 2 hour wait in the waiting room and said they would refer me to tissue viability Monday morning and i should hear around lunch. Having heard nothing and with my wound leaking through the dressing (no extra dressing was provided. rang the tissue viability. They said they hadnt had a referral and they didnt see outpatients.

So I am left with a leaky wound no one seems to want to see or help me heal!

I think overall the care is apalling. There are some wonderful staff there but communication between departments is shocking, and I am bemused as to why minor suturing and debridment has to carried out under anesthetic, it really isnt worth the risk!!!!
