I received positive and personal support from the midwife who was assisting my labour.
When my waters broke and I did not progress, two days after my son was due, the plan for his birth changed drastically; from a water birth in a midwife-led unit to an induced labour in a hospital. There the midwives were incredibly positive and respectful of our birth plan. They made sure that everything that could be provided in the different setting was, and ensured that both my partner and my mum felt welcome and included during my labour. As I was put on the syntocinon drip, I was entitled to one-to-one midwife care. Our midwife was amazing, respecting our privacy but inspiring and supporting where appropriate. When I didn't progress as expected, she was as disappointed as any of us; and I felt that she was proud of me for surviving 4 hours of intense contractions using only a TENS machine. music and massage. The personalised care meant that this is the part of my labour that I am most proud of and I am incredibly grateful to Nicki for the care that she provided.
