"Absolutely disgusting level of empathy."

About: University Hospital Aintree

My mother received an appointment from her GP to see a specialist regarding an eating disorder. She arrived home in tears after being treated in an unprofessional, unempathetic and completely disgusting manner. The tone in which they spoke to her is unacceptable and was without a shread of compassion or respect. The subject of her health makes her very nervous and anxious. To comment that they would be overjoyed if their other patients weight 6.5 stone, that she should simply just eat 4 meals a day, that she should quit smoking because they never known a person who's quit and not put on weight and rolled their eyes when she described being neither anorexic or bulimic but a mix of both making the assumption she was denying having an illness, those comments are absolutely infuriating after she has battled with this illness for over 30 years and is only looking for advice and care from hospital staff. I have never in all my years seen her so upset after dealing with a doctor and we will be making a formal complaint against them. I hope the Dr in question reviews their manner when speaking to patients like this and understands that after years of her trying to battle this they could have completely thrown her back into an abyss as stress is fuel with a situation such as hers. I wouldn't wish dealing with this doctor on any patient as they are just everything a doctor shouldn't be.

Response from University Hospital Aintree

We are sorry to hear that your mother didn't receive the level of care she would expect.

In order to take this forward formally the best thing is to contact the Patient Advice and Complaints Team, which we note from your comments that you have already done. Thank you.
