"Shocking treatment of patients and state of..."

My brother was brought into this hospital by ambulance with high levels of anxiety, inability to breath properly and chest pains. He was put into a cubicle and tests run. 3 hours later a doctor came to see him to say that they (the doctor) had to go home, that some tests were run which were satisfactory, but they were waiting for one more and a different doctor would come in half an hour to explain the results. A nurse came in once to take his blood pressure, said it was high and left the room. I tried to show the nurse the medication he takes so the nurse would be aware of it, the nurse asked me why I was bothering to show them when all he had was high blood pressure - his bloodpressure was 197/120!

After 2 hours, when no one had come and I had chased three different members of staff to check where the results were, we were told to move to the obs ward to wait for a doctor. We were put into a cubicle which was already occupied by two people and were told to wait. After an hour and a half I explained that my brother was becoming more agitated and stressed in this environment. Additionally, he was not offered even a drink of water in the 7 hours he had already been there. People in the Obs ward were being ignored. The entire area of urgent care was filthy, bloody cotton wool swabs on the floor, toilets covered in splattered excrement that had clearly been there for a day or so. The nurse in the Obs ward asked me to come to see the doctor in person because the doctor was ignoring their requests to come and see us. When I found the doctor they told me my brother could have gone home 4 hours before and they had instructed a nurse to tell him this. I asked why a doctor would not explain blood results to a patient with anxiety themself - the doctor then said they would come along shortly. In total we were in the hospital for 9 hours - it was the most horrendous experience, with the worst case of patient care and hygiene I had ever seen. I will be making a formal complaint, but if you are ever unwell please do not go to this hospital - go to Kingston.
