I am now in my 50s. At the time I felt ill I was in my late 40s, I was in work and I had been feeling a bit sicky and unwell all day no chest pains at all when I got home my partner said she had to be at our gp surgery for her appointment so when I was there the doctor seen me he said he would do a ecg on the safe side then out of the blue he said you need to go into hospital as you have had a small heart attack. Anyway the cardiology ward looked after me very well the only complaint I have was that I had to stay connected to a monitor for 10 days waiting for a bed to come available at the uhw for me to have a angiogram. Other than that the Royal Gwent hospital was marvellous all the doctors and nurses were very polite and professional at all times. When I was transferred to uhw I had my angiogram and was told I needed a double heart bypass again. I was put at ease everything was explained very well to me and I was looked after excellent before and after my bypass. I am again experiencing more problems with my heart but I am not worrying about having to maybe go back in to hospital as our consultants' and there staff are probably among the best there is

If this patient waited 10 days to be transferred then we apologise for that delay as we would usually aim to accommodate patients much faster than that, aiming for a maximum wait of 96 hours, often less. At times of very high emergency demand at UHW e.g. with Primary PCI, this can put pressure on the beds which can lead to increased waiting times for transfers. To address this we have now established a ‘treat and repatriate’ model for relatively straight forward patients to be collected by a dedicated ambulance, brought to UHW for treatment and returned to their DGH the same day and this can help to keep waiting times down. There is now an operational cath lab at the Royal Gwent. It is very pleasing to hear that the care was of a high standard once the patient was here.
