About: Bromley Healthcare / Speech and language therapy for adults

(as the patient),

I was referred for speech therapy in January 2015. Following brain surgery in the left Parietal/Occital area for a haemangiopericytoma (grade 2 malignant brain tumour) in February 2014 I had a number of neurological problems, one being conduction aphasia which made it very difficult for me to complete any word or word sequence that had repetitive sounds. Another relating to speech was the inability at times to recall very common words.

I was originally advised that I would be seen within three months but in fact it was not until end August that I was offered an appointment at a different Clinic Which I had to decline as a further problem from he surgery means that I am now a non driver. I eventually got an appointment in the Orpington Clinic in September.

The treatment I received was superb but the waiting time is quite frankly appalling.

Following three visits I feel so empowered.

This member of staff has given me a strategy for the repetitive sound problem which has worked beyond my wildest dreams. All I have to do is air write with either hand to trick my brain to use a different pathway and I am able to speak fluently. It feels like magic.

This member of staff has also given me strategies to cope with my word loss problem and although not quite the miracle of the is nevertheless very positive.

This member of staff was quite marvellous, understanding and with such great empathy. It was a joy to work with the member of staff and I never expected such a wonderful outcome. Just wish I hadn't waited so long to find a strategy which would make such a difference to my well being.

I have followed up on the current postion and the Operations Manager has informed me that the CCG have agreed to fund an additional 1.5 whole time equivalent therapists which, when recruited, will significantly reduce the waiting times in this valued service.

I hope you agree, this is really good news.
