"My elderly mother was taken to ..."

About: Whiston Hospital

(as a relative),

What could be improved

My elderly mother was taken to a&e dehydrated, suspected water infection about 4pm over 7 hours before she was finally put on drip and given a bed on a sub standard ward Communication between staff was poor. we were never able to see the consultant my mother was under, when i asked we were told we had to make an appointment through his secretary? my mother was in a critical state. decisions were made regarding my mothers treatment which were not discussed with her next of kin - myself and my sister she was put on morphine without it even being discussed with us. we had to insist to get my mother moved onto a quieter ward, we were told we could not have a private room for my mum to die instead we would have to share this time with 30 other elderly patients. we were told we could not spend extra time with my mother on the ward as it would effect the treatment, care and respect of other patients on the ward, this was when we only had a short time left with her what about the care and respect for our mother! . we decided the best option was to take my mother home to die at my sisters this was the only time the hospital really excelled themselves and after a very long wait 3 - 4 hrs an ambulance finally arrived to take my mother on her final journey.
