What I liked
The 2nd midwife who treated me - she was fantastic!
What could be improved
The first midwife who treated me was not interested in mine or my baby's well being at all. I was induced as I had gone 2 weeks over my EDD. She inserted the canula and started the oxytocin then 'nipped next door for 5 minutes' for half an hour at a time. I tried to tell her the canula wasn't in properly, she told me I was being silly. When the doseage was upped on the oxytocin the drug built up in my wrist and ballooned. She then got someone proper to put it in, but didn't reset the oxytocin levels and I started to recieve 4 times the inital dose I was meant to. Luckily at this point her shift finished and midwife no. 2 took over. The contractions came on too strong too soon and I ended up having to have an epidural which ruined the labour process for me. My baby was born using forceps, luckily the skilled workers in the department narrowly managed to avoid the need for C-section.
Also, in the post natal ward there was an auxilliary nurse who was rather too stern and could do with some serious lessons in compassion!
Obviously everything worked out, I'm well and my baby is beautiful and healthy. It is unfortunate that the over riding memory I have of my experience is that of a nurse who didn't give a stuff about my well being.
Ormskirk is a good hospital. The main problem is that too many people want to travel from miles around (bypassing MANY other good hospitals on the way) to have their baby here, only, I presume, so that they can have Ormskirk on the birth certificate. The problem for me is that Ormskirk is my local hospital, but I worry that when we have our 2nd child in a few years time (all being well) I may be forced to travel out of my way in order that I can recieve adequate care whilst mancunians and liverpudlians use the facilities only 2 miles from my home.
