"A serious knee joint injury in Huddersfield go..."

I'm 53 yrs old and recently had a knee accident which resulted in a (Bucket Handle) 1 lateral and 2 medial knee cartilage tears and delamination of the cruciate knee ligament after initial rapid assessment and an MRI scan and a further diagnostic interpretation by the excellent "West Yorkshire Knee Unit" physiotherapist I was refered for surgical intervention, after a reasonable wait (within the prescribed 18 weeks) for surgery. The subsequent surgery was performed at the Huddersfield Royal infirmary in the Day case surgery unit by the consultant and upon wakening was reviewed by the said consultant who made a rather unsettling comment when they told me "the surgery had been performed and that they had cleaned up the damage as well as possible but until the knee had completely worn out a replacement knee joint would be unsuitable because the cartilage hadn't completely worn out in my knee" this comment is like a mechanic telling you you have cracked pistons in your engine and 15 MPH is ok but until the engine seizes he wont replace them. So allowing time for the knee to settle was given a set of printed exercises not Physiotherapy to perform while I waited and I was given a wound check appointment the following week and an outpatients appointment a further 5 weeks on. I had noticed a grating sensation (Crepitus) and clicking and swelling when I resumed walking normally and working and mentioned it at my wound check to the nurses and I was told to take paracetamol for pain if required and ibuprofen which I could buy myself over the counter but that some pain and swelling was to be expected as surgery was only a week old, so I went away and waited for my Outpatient appointment. 2 more weeks passed and my knee had now reached a stage where after 2 days working the knee swells and is so painful I cannot weightbear properly or work a full week and the medication isn't working or the Physio exercises. All attempts to exercise normally ie; Run, Cycle or Walking any distance cannot be performed due to the pain and swelling and so my quality of life has diminshed, leisure with my 5 yr old daughter is almost impossible unless it is restricted activities. and on returning to the surgeon in outpatients was shown the extent of the damage ie; 3 deep fissures in the cartilage with a surgical instrument inserted to show depth! I was told by them they had "just cleaned up the loose debris" and the surface was rough and couldn't be smoothed. I have been left in pain,with swelling, clicking and a grating sensation within the knee and again told I cannot have a knee replacement at this time and the current excuse is because the cement would be painful in the bone (Balderdash) as well as reiterating the comment the cartilage isn't completely worn out and offered physiotherapy which I have now declined while I look for a second opinion elsewhere. In short unless your forced to go to Huddersfield Royal infirmary as an only and last resort go elsewhere.. I feel cheated.
