"Cleanliness of Children A&E Department"
About: Royal Bolton Hospital Royal Bolton Hospital Bolton BL4 0JR
My son bumped his head at home on Sunday 5th July which resulted in us visiting the A&E Dept of Bolton Royal Hospital. We arrived at approx 7am and the Childrens A&E was closed from 9pm-9am, so we went to the main A&E Department. The service there was good and the area seemed clean and tidy. The receptionist took our details and then sent us through to the childrens A&E to be seen. When we went through, there were 4 nurses sat behind the reception not doing anything, just sitting and chatting. We were told to go an sit and wait for my sons details to come through. My main area of complaint is the cleanliness of the waiting area. There were 3 waste bins overflowing with rubbish (used tissues, food wrappers etc), the childrens 'play area' looked filthy, the chidlrens table was sticky and marked. The toys were all broken and filthy, books ripped and torn and also filthy. I was reluctant for my little boy to touch anything! It was 7am on a Sunday morning and I consider the level of rubbish was more than just from a night in A&E, it looked like it had been there for a full 24hrs at least. I appreciate it is not the 'job' of the nurses, but I personally could not be sat chatting and send someone round to sit in a filthy waiting room with overflowing bins and dirty surfaces! Could one of them not have called for a porter/cleaner to empty them and clean around? Or maybe one of them grab a large bin bag and emptied them, which would have been a 2 minute job, I am very proud of the NHS and think the service is magnificent, but just this visit left me feeling a little disappointed. I know it is only a small complaint and may seem insignificant, but i did just want to raise it.
