"Shameful"

About: North Tyneside General Hospital

My parents in law have been misfortunate enough to be admitted to this hospital several times during the last year. They are both in their 80's - one suffers with Parkinsons Disease and the other is a stroke victim. The lack respect shown to them has been quite astonishing and failings in their care borders on neglect - both have suffered further injury whilst in the hospital. Both were in the same ward together for several weeks which resulted in our losing their home carers. We were given very little notice when they were to be discharged which meant the family and social services had insufficient time to put new care in place for them. Far from being supportive, the hospital threatened them with eviction if they did not leave on the intended date! As a result we were forced to have them placed in respite care which was not suitable for their needs and which caused further deterioration to their health. Shame on you all!

Dear anonymous I am very shocked to hear your account of the care given to both of your parents, which is very unlike the high levels of care that we pride ourselves on. We work hard to provide safe and dignified care to all, particularly our older patients, so your description falls well below that which we would expect to see in our care. We also have strong links with community services to ensure continuity of care for those patients who need it once they leave our hospitals. I’m very sorry if your parents have not received the support they needed. I would like very much to discuss this with you further, as without knowing your parents’ details, it is very difficult for me to investigate. I would be very grateful if you could contact me on 0344 811 8111 and ask for extension 4546, or you can email me at cathy.gattens@northumbria.nhs.uk I look forward to speaking with you soon. Kind regards Cathy Gattens, operational services manager, elderly care
