"A long wait to get a diagnosis"

About: Torbay Hospital / Neurology

(as the patient),

I saw a consultant in the Heart and Lung department in mid-May following some sleep clinic tests I had done in April.

The consultant was very nice, but could not help me and referred me to Neurology. I had an EEG in June, but the lady who did the test said I would get the results when I see the Neurologist. I am having a brain scan in July at 5-25pm, then will have to wait for an appointment with the Neurologist.

I have been having episodes of loss of time since January. My GP referred me to the the sleep clinic in February. The problem is my husband is very distressed as he watches me go floppy and cannot wake me from these episodes.

I am upset because of my husband's distress and the length of time it is taking to get a diagnosis of whats happening to me.

Dear Cadet701

Thank you for your feedback and please accept my apologies for the distress and upset caused to both you and your husband.

You may find it helpful if I explain some of the detail around waiting times; as you may be aware, You have the right to start your non-emergency NHS consultant-led treatment within a maximum of 18 weeks from referral, unless you choose to wait longer or it is clinically appropriate that you wait longer.

This is for the start of treatment, where a patient is referred within the same hospital for different tests or a different area then there is a wait time associated with this; however we would hope that it wasn’t too long.

I do appreciate that it can be frustrating and daunting to wait, particularly when you have other family members that are worried too.

I’d really like to be able to look into your specific case and to be able to understand and explain exactly what has happened, I would be grateful if you would contact me and I can look into this for you, our contact details follow below.

You can contact me using the following details, email: patientfeedback.sdtccg@nhs.net or call: 01803 652 578.

Alternatively, you might prefer to contact Torbay Hospital’s Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) directly, you can do so by email to: pals.sdhc@nhs.net or by calling: 01803 655 838.

Best wishes

Sam
