"Specialist unable to carry out assessment"

About: Locala Community Partnerships CIC / Children's speech and language therapy

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was referred to SLT Batley in October last year. He had an initial language assessment in January which resulted in a referral to a specialist speech therapist who came to see him in school in June, however the specialist was unable to carry out her assessment because the first therapist had not done a "complete" language assessment apparently and the initial therapist is not due to return to his school until October.

To say I'm utterly disappointed with Locala SLT would be a huge understatement. Each time I phone to speak to someone I'm told they are either off until next week or on holiday or away. I know that it's a long process as there is a big waiting list but surely when it's your turn to be assessed this is what should happen?

He's at the end of his reception year and will be going into year 1 being no further along in the SLT process and it is affecting his work and achievement at school.

Response from Emma Dickens, Customer Engagement Manager, Integrated Children's Services, Locala Community Partnerships CIC

Firstly my sincere apologies for not responding to this sooner. Unfortunately I have not been getting notifications when we receive comments about this particular team, and so your posting was missed. I have now put this right but I realise that you have been waiting far too long for a response so I am very sorry.

As for your frustrations with the process you have been in so far, I would very much like to put you in touch with our Speech and Language Team Leader - so that we can look at your concerns in more detail and understand why you have experienced such a delay, and understand what needs to happen next for your son.

As I don't have any contact details for you can I ask that you contact me at emma.dickens@locala.org.uk and I will take up this issue immediately.

Best wishes
