I came into the RSCH for elective surgery on my ascending aortic aneurysm - my risk rate was quite high but from the moment I arrived on the ward to the moment I left I cannot fault the care, empathy, understanding and compassion shown by all that worked on Cardiac Ward 7a. I had my original heart surgery at the heart hospital in London and I can say without a doubt the care I received at the RSCH was by far 100 times better. The surgeons, anethetist, perfusionist, ward round teams and Sodexo staff treated me as an individual, made sure I understood all that was happening, let me make decisions and listened to my concerns. An amazing team of staff. I have left my comment on the nursing staff to last as I believe they deserve their own paragraph !! They work long hours, under extreme pressure yet the care they gave me as an individual could not be faulted. They treated me with dignity, respect and as a human being. They genuinely cared about me, encouraged, supported and brought with them a smile every single day. They made my stay as nice as possible under the circumstances and I would recommend anyone requiring heart surgery to have it done at the RSCH, I was apprehensive at first due to recent negative press but I made the right decision to stick with the RSCH. The nursing team are a credit to the hospital and the NHS and cannot thank them enough for how they treated and cared for me.
