My frail and elderly Grandad who suffers from Alzheimers was recently admitted following a fall and was placed on this ward. All I can say was we were absolutely appalled by the lack of care he received - he actually deteriorated more whilst in hospital. He developed bed sores for the first time in his life, became doubly incontinent and was diagnosed with MRSA. The care was just not good enough, they couldn't even get the basics right such as his name! We as a family were appalled. The nurses were never anywhere to be seen and when you did manage to speak to one they were totally uninterested and didn't even know who my Grandad was. It seems to be the health care assistants that are running this ward. Then if things couldn't get any worse, we arrived one night to find my Grandad nowhere to be seen only to be told (eventually after 3 nurses couldn't help us) he'd been transferred to a rehabilitation centre in Houghton - no phone call, message, nothing. It is absolutely disgusting. My Grandad had previously stayed on the Stroke Unit during his last admission and the care was outstanding - the difference was at total opposite ends of the spectrum. I'm a passionate believer of the NHS and think its a great thing in this country but wards like this give it the bad name we so often hear about in the media.
