"Post-Op Infection"

About: St James's University Hospital

Admitted as an emergency and had my gall bladder out 2 days later, followed by a post op infection that took a lot of antibiotics and more than 2 weeks to clear. When asked if I would go ahead with the surgery, there being no other option, I asked the surgeon about their infection rates, they were rude and wouldn't answer. When my saline drip got disconnected and the tube fell onto the floor it was reconnected without any attempt to clean the tube! When I had to go and ask the nursing staff where the toilets were they ignored me completely before directing me to a toilet where the floor and parts of the walls were covered in faeces. I had a migraine the whole time I was on the ward. There are televisions above the bed that automatically come on and flicker - the objective being to catch your attention and persuade you to pay to watch tv. This just helped trigger my migraines, along with the stress at the appalling conditions, lack of sanitation and edible food... The food was inedible and often no item on the menu that was even suitable for someone with any kind of gastric complaint - curry night!?! Wildly inappropriate for those who cannot eat spicy food due to a serious medical condition. When my husband came to collect me there was no parking available anywhere nearby and I wasn't allowed to borrow a wheelchair so I had to go out the loading bay in my NHS nightie so that my husband could stop in the loading bay, and I could go out to meet him. No chance of him parking up and giving my own clothes to change into to go home. Complete and utter nightmare.

Dear Anonymous,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us and bring your concerns to our attention.

I was very sorry to read of the poor experience you feel you have had whilst in our care. I can only imagine that this was a very stressful experience for you and your family. Unfortunately there is insufficient detail in your post to allow us to investigate these matters further; therefore, I would ask that you can contact the Trusts Patient, Advice and Liaison Service to discuss these matters in more detail.

You can contact PALS on 0113 206 6261 or alternatively you can email patientexperience.leedsth@nhs.net.

Once again let me thank you taking the time to write to us and post your views.

Kind regards

Rosie
