"New South Glasgow Hospital porters"

About: NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as a service user),

None of the porters are being allowed to attend for induction. I think that this is absolutely unacceptable as they are in the greatest need of orientation.

How are they going to know where different departments are, or indeed, how to advise patients and visitors of directions if they do not know themselves?

Moving to the new hospital is stressful enough for everyone, but the Portering department now have the added worry of not being allowed to familiarise themselves with their new working environment.

I believe that it will have a huge negative impact on patient experience and care if they are not put forward to attend induction very soon.

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

Dear worried11,

Local Facilities Management colleagues have arranged to undertake Porter orientation slightly differently to the corporate approach for other members of staff, given the extent of building awareness that Porters require.

This process will include a video being shown to Porters and then in groups, portering staff will be fully orientated with the internal building routes and layouts by designated Supervisors. I appreciate that this process may take longer than the originally planned inductions, however it was felt that our porters require a more in depth orientation of the building. I will ensure that all portering staff are fully aware of this arrangement to allay concerns.

William Hunter,

General Manager, Facilities - South
