"Rheumatology is a Calamity Dept"

About: King George Hospital

After waiting an eternity for appointments I was advised the most suitable course of action for me would be an injection called Denosumab. I am only 36 years old but I have osteoporosis and I have suffered many bone fractures. After being given extremely high dose calcium for 15 days I was finally ready for my appointment with the nurse to do the injection, or so I though! After explaining to the nurse why I had an appointment they proceeded to scare the life out of me by saying "Are you completely sure you want this medication? Do you understand what it is? Are you aware of all its side effects? Etc etc etc". I answered as honestly as I could, and that was by saying if the consultant believes Denosumab is the best option for me then who am I to contradict? After all, they are the specialist. The nurse proceeded to book the injection for the following week and I left the hospital with my head spinning. The following day the same nurse called me to say my injection had been cancelled due to the pharmacy not being prepared to issue the injection to me...... end of conversation..... nurse hangs up!!! That was a week ago. I now have no idea what is going on as no one has had the courtesy to contact me again. I now believe that particular drug should never have been offered to me, but if that is the case then at least tell me what is going to be done instead. My next routine appointment is months away so lets hope someone somewhere cares enough to contact me.

Thank you for sharing your comment on NHS Choices. I am concerned to hear about this, and it not acceptable for you to have been dealt with in this way. Please contact me via our PALS team on 01708 435 454 or email PALS@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk so I can investigate. Yours sincerely Wendy Matthews Interim Chief Nurse
