"3rd time operation cancelled.... This time in..."

About: Macclesfield District General Hospital

my fiancé today had her operation cancelled for a 3rd time. She was in the operating theatre and just about to be put under and they had to cancel due to the woman previous crashing whilst in recovery. She'd been there from 7am this happened at 5.30pm. She'd already been cancelled twice due to overload and lack of beds. The op was for a cyst on her chest which has become infected first in 2012 and again October 2014. It should have been followed up after the 2012 infection but due to incompetence this wasn't the case, also on her visit here in 2012 she developed MRSA which became apparent when her wound wouldn't heal. When it became infected in 2014 they apologised for not following up and couldn't explain a valid reason except imcompetence. It was arranged to entirely remove the cyst after only draining the infection the first two times. This was cancelled twice the day before and then today when she was going through to theatre. The surgeon arrived an hour late and full of arrogance. The MRSA caused a keloid scar on her chest. So as well as taking away the cyst they agreed at consultation that the surgeon would try and remove her keloid scar as well. When he came to see her the surgeon said they never said that and they were only taking the cyst and would be incising vertically when they previously said horizontally. The surgeon checked the notes and my fiancé was correct but they said they didn't remember ( consultation was 20 weeks previous). So she got cancelled again at 5.30pm after being there 10 and a half hours and the surgeon never came to tell her. The nurses were superb and couldn't have been nicer and more apologetic. The anaesthetist was also brilliant and arranged for her to switch surgeons and get her in tomorrow but will have to go last because she's previously had MRSA which isn't fair considering its incomplete on the hospitals part why it was caught in the 1st place. She's been messed around so much over a simple thing and it's totally unacceptable. This was acknowledged by the poor nurses but the hierarchy were nowhere to be seen. We've had many good experiences here as a family and previously couldn't fault it, but the surgeon in question has been a joke and so disorganised that we've lost all faith in the place.

We were very sorry to read your comments. Like most other hospitals, Macclesfield District General recently faced an exceptionally busy period with a very high number of patient admissions. As a result, we have had to postpone some less urgent surgery in order to prioritise the most urgent and life-threatening cases. We appreciate this may have caused frustration for some patients but would like to reassure you we are endeavouring to reschedule postponed operations as quickly and safely as we can. Please contact the Customer Care Team to discuss this matter further and they will be more than happy to assist you. They can be contacted on 01625 661449 or e-mail on ecn-tr.CustomerCareService@nhs.net. The trust aims to continually improve the quality of services we provide and your feedback is key to achieving this.
