"Ocular myasthenia gravis at Preston"

About: Royal Preston Hospital / Neurology

(as the patient),

I was refered to see a neurologist as I am currently pregnant and have been suffering from Ocular Myasthenia since I was in Primary School. So the Midwives and Consultants and the antenatal clinic want to make sure that the baby will not have any effects and breastfeeding will not be a problem.

However my husband and I are very disappointed in the care I received upon meeting with the Neurologist doctor. He did a simple test to see if my symptoms will show, but obviously they won't show as I have been taking my medicine regligiously and the last dose was only an hour ago.

He went on to say that he didn't think I suffered from Myasthenia as I didn't show and any symptoms of weakness of limbs or double vision in the many years that I have had Ocular Myasthenia. So I went on to ask him if that was the case, then why does my medication work and why does my eyelid droop if I forget to take my medicine? He sais that he didn't know.

I was diagnosed in Singapore by a Professor and my GP there and Optometrist both concurred with the Professor's diagnosis. Ocular Myasthenia can be diagnosed with either drooping of one or both eyelids and/or double vision. I only have the symptoms of the drooping of one eyelid. So I don't understand why now this consultant is telling me otherwise.

When I mentioned antibodies passing on to my baby, he said to me, 'What antibodies?'. Finally he said that we will do a blood test to check if there are antibodies present in my blood, and if there are then we will need to monitor my baby in the first few weeks of it's birth. And then he also said he wll organise for me to go to do an electrode test which is 96% accurate in confirming myasthenia.

I feel very disappointed with the treatment that I got from him and the type of questions and answers. I was there as a worried mother to be and I felt he was insulting my intelligence and telling me that I might not have Ocular Myasthenia and saying that he doesn't know what it is that I am suffering from.
