In the last year, I have been a frequent visitor to the endocrinoogy department due to hypocalcemia and hypoparathyroidisim after total thyroid removal surgery in 2014. During this time the care that I have been given from everyone involved from my consultant Dr Jeremy Turner down to the phlebotomists and the receptionists has been outstanding. For a person under the age of 20 who has a disease which tends to be in older people, the whole team are very kind and considerate to me with the way that that they discuss it as well as my treatment.
I went to the outpatient clinic yesterday for an appointment with Dr Turner as a follow up to my last appointment in July. He is a very kind and considerate doctor who cares about his patients and knows his stuff about the disease which is very important. He was fine with what I said about how I had been coping with the disease and we agreed on the best course of action before my next appointment. As well he was able to make me feel relaxed about the appointment which was important as my anxiety can make me feel very nervous about things like hospital appointments. I came out of the appointment feeling very happy about it all.
Although there has been a lot of critiscm about the NHS in recent years, the care which I have received from Dr Turner and the endocrinolgy team at NNUH proves that there really is good parts about the NHS even though the media might not show it all the time.
