"My Grandad, Roland Todd, sadly passed away..."

About: Blyth Community Hospital

My Grandad, Roland Todd, sadly passed away yesterday morning after quite a fight - he had his reasons for waiting and chose to leave when he did. Thanks to the staff on this ward - the consultant and everyone involved, he was able to have his family there around the clock. The staff treat my Grandad with respect and kindness and it was really nice to see for the family. His dignity and pride remained with him. The kindness shown by every single member of staff towards my Grandad, my little Nanna and all of us who remained by his side was something I struggle right now to describe. I give a very heartfelt thank you to you all for helping us when we needed it. You are all an absolute credit to the service... Diamonds. I am pleased you got to meet the man that I am proud to call my Grandad. Thank you xxx Roland Todd Jnr Jnr

Dear Roland,   I am so sorry for your loss.   Working in healthcare brings with it an enormous privilege to care for people at critical moments in their life. We are lucky because our work enables us to form relationships with amazing patients and families and to work with them to make a difference in ways that we know really matter. I didn’t have the opportunity to meet your Grandad but your affection and deep sense of pride tells me that he was a very special person, and my sense is that our staff will already know that.   I am so glad that we could be there for him and your family just when you needed us – I hope the knowledge that he was cared for dignity and gentleness at the end of his life is of some comfort to you now. It is incredibly kind of you to pay tribute to our staff when your grief is still so raw. We will ensure your thoughtful feedback is passed on to them so that they can understand all that this meant for you as a family.   Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if there is anything that you need.   With our sympathy, Annie
