Male patients are expected to share a common garden with Female patients while the same Female patients also have access to a Female only garden enclosed on Silver Birch. This demonstrates inherit sexual discrimination towards Males and reinforces the notion that Males cannot be victims of abuse from the opposite gender yet maybe a source of abuse.

Thank you for your comment. I have made enquiries and the following information has been provided. All our wards, including Silver Birch, adhere to the Department of Health’s standards for eliminating mixed sex accommodation. These require that “Women only day areas should be provided (DH 2009), however do not make the same requirements for males. The female garden area on Silver Birch ward is only accessible through the female only lounge, therefore cannot be utilised by males, as this would breach the national guidance. The Trust therefore makes no judgements about gender and potential abuse but is providing services and environments that adhere to the nationally set requirements and we are required to report against. I hope that this goes some way to explaining the restrictions with the use of this garden.
