I went for a small procedure in the day stay unit yesterday, The first thing i noticed was the friendly reception staff. My appointment was for 12, a few minutes past 12 a lovely nurse came out to collect me (i wish i had taken her name but didn't, please pass on my thanks when you get this) As i walked into the department the first thing that hit me was the smell and sight of how clean everywhere was. I was shown to my bed and told where i was on the list and what would happen next by the nurse. Within ten minutes the lovely nurse came back and went through all of the relevant paperwork, she was very thorough and didn't seem rushed like nurses and doctors generally seem in hospitals (because they no doubt generally are). The Surgeon a short time later came to see me, he talked me through the whole thing and made sure any questions i had were answered in a way i could understand without medical jargon. The anaesthetists were next and again talked me through what they would be doing, asked if i had any concerns/questions and left. When the time came to be taken through, my lovely nurse came back and took me through, i had the needle inserted into my hand and then then was put under. I came round from my procedure in the recovery room, the nurses had two young children who had also just come round and were attending to them. Three times i was apologised to for the wait and that they wouldn't be long!? i must have only waited ten minutes, which in my eyes is not a long wait and of course, i was very happy for the children to be taken care of before me. I was wheeled back to the ward where within a matter of minutes a young lady asked me if i wanted Tea and food, i accepted and within minutes again she was back!! My lovely nurse came back and made sure all was ok. The surgeon then came back and talked me through the outcome which i was happy with. I was then discharged and walked to the door to meet my boyfriend by the lovely nurse who had looked after me all day. All in all i cant fault the day stay unit in any way, i have lived in Southend all my life and had both of my children at the hospital. The experiences i had within the maternity department and A&E were not bad by any means but were no where near the personal and attentive care i received yesterday. Well done to all on your team and keep up the good work. Laura.
