"Grand parent with treatment"

About: Castle Hill Hospital

The hospital itself is horrendously sign posted but we got to Ward 22 finally! The staff are friendly but one member stuck out (a nurse) as being un professional. My partners grandmother is being cared for and it has all seemed a very confusing time for the family not knowing what has been going on. She took a turn for the worst and finally, after waiting 45 mins for a Dr) a fantastic Dr arrived and got the ball rolling with immediate care. The busted on the other hand was, well, abominable! After recieving some devastating news (the Dr did say have you met nurse '...', 'once met never forgotten!' He was correct! She came to her bedside after this terrible news had been delivered and said in some words, 'I hope you don't smoke. If all young people came here and saw the effects of lighting up they wouldn't do it. It's disgusting.' (I am a smoker!) It de stressed granny and I was in shock she was saying this in front of a terminally ill patient! A poor man was shouting out for 20 minutes. The same nurse walked into his room and 'What's the matter now? What do you want not the way I expect any patient to be spoken to even if they are failing to communicate or have been distressed their whole stay. What also frustrated me is she needed her bed clothes changing and as much as I wanted to help I couldn't do it. She was uncomfortable and we were trying to help her sit up but her basic needs weren't being met during this deterioration. A lady that takes food orders for the next day's meals also came in and asked her what she would want to eat. She couldn't communicate or sip water let alone decide what she wanted to eat the next day. All in all its been a distressing visit (diagnosis aside) and I felt a lot more could be done in this circumstance. I believe a lot of basic needs should have been met prior to our visit after she took this turn (catheter for one) I hope her needs are met now in her time of need. Living 100's of miles away I wish we could have spent more time with her as we were given the chance to have open visitation (which we are all extremely grateful for) so I thank the Dr for his amazing professionalism in this extremely busy ward, but the nurse was another story all together!
