"Dismissed without further investigations"

About: Leicester City, Leicestershire and Rutland Out of Hours

(as the patient),

I attended the out of hours as advised by 111 as I was about 6 weeks pregnant but started bleeding heavily and passing clots. Was given an appointment time but was about two hours overran. When I was finally seen by the doctor, he performed a dipstick pregnancy test. However he did not follow the instructions of the test. He dipped the dipstick in the sample but then dropped the dipstick into the sink (Although the dipstick was pickd up immediately, this would have diluted the sample). And then after only 5-10 seconds he told me I was not pregnant. (Should have waited much longer especially in early pregnancy). I queried the result but he insisted that the previous multiple home tests were wrong and told me that the blood 'was just normal period and if I was concerned I should see my GP'. He then dismissed me without any further investigations. He made me feel like I was wasting his time.

When I visited my GP, I was quickly referred to the early pregnancy assessment unit for investigations which confirmed I was miscarrying but needed monitoring as the blood results indicated otherwise.

I felt that my treatment/monitoring has been delayed because he performed the test incorrectly and hence getting a false negative result and therefore refusing me further investigations, especially it was over bank holiday weekend and I had to wait longer for a GP appointment and then a wait for an appointment at EPAU.

Dear SMY,

Firstly, I would like to sayI'm really sorry to hear about your experience. This must have been a very worrying and distressing time for you.

The experience you describe here with the doctor in our A&E department does not reflect the behaviour and high standards we expect from our staff.

We would like the opportunity to pass this onto the A&E managers so they can look into this further for you. If you could please send further details, including the time and date of your visit, the doctors name (if you can remember) and your personal details to communications@uhl-tr.nhs.uk

We would like the opportunity to investigate this further to ensure we can improve the service.

Best wishes

Dear SMY,

Further to my notr above, I have just spoken to our Head of Emergency Department who has informed me that you may have visited the GP Out of Hours service, rather than the A&E department?

If that is the case, I will need to pass your comments onto another team, who are not actually managed by University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. We are of course, still able to help put you in touch in with the right team.

Best wishes

Update posted by SMY (the patient)

Hi, yes. As stated in my original story, it was the Out of Hours GP service. The A&E team at the royal is excellent having had an emergency not long after that incident. As the visitit was in December 2011, I don't think anything can be done and UHL cannot control the quality of the locum doctors for the OOH GP service. But I thank you for your response.

No worries, I think I misread it. Thank you for your kind words about our A&E department, that will mean a lot to staff during this challenging time.

I hope the GP out of hours service has improved since 2011 and you still have the right to raise this with the City CCG if you so wish.

Either way, I hope you have a lovely 2015.

Best wishes

Laura
