"5yr old head injury"

About: The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (King's Lynn)

after my son fell and hit his head badly resulting in headache, vomiting and nausea and signs of shock we had a paramedic advise that as earliest out of hours gp was 6 hours after incident (2.30am) to go to A & E. On arrival we were seen by an uninterested nurse. the til to wait unmonitored. after 3 hours, 12am, I decided to take my son home, as he was tired and back to normal self. as a courtesy I told the nurse who said I'd have to wait until he'd seen the doctor. She then just walked off. another half hr passed and I told her again I was taking him home, she then threatened that social services would be contacted and Id have to sign a form. absolutely disgusted that a child would be kept waiting this long completely unmonitored and then to be talked to and threatened. Thankfully I have no fear of social services, and keenly anticipate this phone call. I received no copy of the form I had to sign. Furthermore a child in the room had a rash and was interacting freely with other children of all ages. again, this child and the other 5 children had not been seen. absolutely appauled.

May I begin by apologising that no one has replied to your posting before now but unfortunately we have experienced some administrative difficulties. I am very sorry to hear that you and your son had such an unsatisfactory visit to the Emergency Department and that your wait to be seen was not acknowledged and you were responded to in such a manner by a member of staff. I will be passing your comments to the senior nurse and doctor in the Emergency Department to follow up but if you would like to discuss this matter further please do contact me either by telephone or email. I hope that your son is now fully recovered. Claire Roberts Associate Director of Patient Experience Tel: 01553 613459 or email claire.roberts@qehkl.nhs.uk
