"Infecion after felxible cystoscopy at the Hallamshire"

About: Royal Hallamshire Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

I went to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital to the outpatients department for a flexible cystoscopy.

The following day I began to feel unwell as I was sweating, then shivering cold and panting for breath. My wife and I called our local GP and he said I needed to go to hospital. He said because this was not classed as an emergency I would have to wait a couple of hours for an ambulance to take me. In the end my daughter took me.

We arrived at A&E at 8.00pm and it was quite busy. We had to wait a while as I was seen at 12.30am and told that I would need a drip. Eventually they gave the drip at 2.30am only after I had asked the nurse for one. She replied that when she had time she would fit one. Then I got a drip fitted and taken to ward H2.

The staff there were first class. I had a CT scan, x-ray and ECG and all the tests came back with good results. The ward was very clean and the beds were changed every day for each patient and the nurses took their aprons off and put new ones on for each new patient.

After a few days I went home with antibiotics. I had had a water infection as a result of the outpatient flexible cystoscopy treatment. My doctor said that it was quite a common problem after this procedure. Some people apparently can be extremely ill afterwards. I don’t know why I caught an infection, was it because of the un-cleanliness or just a common problem?

The nurses were kept very busy, especially on the night shift but they never complained and did it all with good humour. My wife and I have been into the Hallamshire on several occasions and we have always had good care.
