"NHS at its best"

About: St Mary's Hospital (London)

I attended the Liver & Anti-Viral Unit at St Mary's Hospital today for a Fibroscan. This is an out-patient non-invasive procedure and the letter of appointment had explained very clearly what it would involve. I was therefore very well briefed, but expected that I would probably have to wait a while for my turn, and that the visit would be routine and impersonal. I was very pleasantly surprised when on arrival at the Unit, I was greeted very cheerfully by name, and ushered into a small consulting room straightaway. The smiling lady technician (GP?) checked carefully that I understood what the procedure involved, carried out the Fibroscan thoroughly and gently, engaged in light-hearted conversation, and made me feel an individual patient and not simply an anonymous hospital number. Thank you!
