"Wanted to remove too many teeth"

About: Newcastle Dental Hospital

My decision didn't matter! My son was referred 2 decay back teeth. After exam they wanted take 7 including front teeth out although others wasn't decay! The dentist said its expensive to put someone under a general anaesthetic to take only 2 teeth out, so while he's sleep take others out too just incase there's decay in future which I really didn't want! The dentist said they won't do it unless I agree with them take 6 or 7 out and also mentioned about bad parenting! So not happy! Came home without treatment because the dentist won't remove just 2 teeth:-(

Response from Newcastle Dental Hospital

Thank you for leaving feedback on the NHS Choices website regarding your recent experience at the Dental Hospital. We are very disappointed that you felt the care and treatment afforded to your son was not of the level expected and we apologise that you have had cause for concern. Without having access to your son’s medical records it is difficult to explain in detail why a particular treatment plan was suggested. There are occasions when it is appropriate to extract relatively healthy ‘baby’ teeth, for example, in order to ensure that the permanent teeth come through evenly or to reduce the potential for a second general anaesthetic. Unfortunately, without the specific details of your son’s case we are not able to provide a full response. If you would like to discuss this further you can do so by contacting a member of the Patient Relations Team on 0191 223 1382 to provide us with your son’s details.
