"Great care for Crohn's disease"

About: Sheffield Children's Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

I had been suffering for a number of years with OFG (Oro-facial granulomatosis) and had been losing weight and having diarrhoea. I had an endoscopy and laporoscopy a couple of years ago but it didn't show much. In April this year, I went to my usually 12 month appointment and the dietician went through my notes and noticed I had lost a lot of weight and hadn't grown in height. She said she wanted an immediate endoscopy and laporoscopy again which I had in May. This time they found a lot of large ulcers and told my parents I had Crohn's and had to be admitted to the hospital immediately, which was a big shock to me and my parents.

I was in the Sheffield children's hospital for 5 days without any solid food while they found out what was the best treatment for me to deal with the ulcers in my stomach and bowl. I was put on a Modulen only diet for 6 weeks and have to take strong immune suppressants and antihistamines for a lot of years. It was my first time in hospital and I thought it was going to be horrible, but I really enjoyed my stay. I thought the staff were brilliant and took really good care of me.
