About: Royal Berkshire Hospital Royal Berkshire Hospital Reading RG1 5AN
I came in to have a tumor removed from my colon. The Surgeon was great. Very skilled and his interest in my recovery was second to none. Very good indeed, and his team. In ICU I was treated well as a person, and kindly, especially when I first came out of the operating theater, but my comment is that I had a catheter put in, and during the night in ICU apparently one of the ladies on duty was concerned that the tube might need flushing, but did not actually do that, so by 6.00am or so, I was in pain in my bladder and asking why that would be. Another young girl who was a trainee I think, came over and the decision was made to flush it then. They found that it was indeed blocked and should have been flushed during the night. I heard the two that were on duty overnight talking, and one said to the other, I told you you should have flushed it out. I must say this was not a good experience for someone who had just had major surgery! The morning team after shift change were very kind. Also once I got to the ward and found later in the day that I had severe shoulder pain, I was given a painkiller called Tramedol. Later that afternoon I was given morphine. By the night time I was hallucinating all night and retching. A terrible disturbance to the other patients. Again not good just after a colon operation! However, the general care in the ward during the day was very good and there were some very kind nursing staff.
