"Knee ligament reconstruction at Ashford Hospital"

About: Ashford Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was assessed and treated for multiple knee dislocations by a consultant at Ashford Hospital Orthopaedics department. I was forgiving of his rushed manner during our consultations as I understand the tremendous workload of the NHS. However, on the day of my surgery he seemed in a big rush to get me into the theatre, which was quite disconcerting.

My recovery was considerably longer than he told me it would be and I still do not have 100% flex back in my knee, as he told me that I would. This is very important to me as I am a keen martial artist and require full use of my knee. I was told in physiotherapy that I may never get 100% flex back in my knee, as it is rare to do so from this procedure. This totally contradicted my surgeon's statement that I would have full use back in about 3 months. In reality, it was almost 6 months before I went back to training and I had to go to a private osteopath (at considerable expense) to help me get more flex back in my knee.

I have recently had a dislocation with my other knee and am having it looked at elsewhere. The consultant I have seen told me that the surgical scars on my knee did not look to be in quite the correct places, and that although the surgery I have had would have repaired the damage done by my dislocations, it did not address the underlying cause of the dislocations.

I was appalled that in one short consultation this surgeon had concluded that there must be an underlying cause to my dislocations and that further diagnosis and surgery would need to take place. This was never even suggested by the original consultant. He seemed to think that my operated knee was now perfectly stable, whereas the new surgeon I am seeing tells me that the operated knee is still tracking to the side, so there must be some unknown cause for this.
