I was visiting family in London when I was alarmed by a sudden deterioration of sight in my right eye. Having heard of Moorfields Eye Hospital, I just walked in to the A&E department. I was greeted courteously and asked to complete the necessary information which was then processed and I was asked to wait. After about 20 minutes I was seen by a triage nurse who explained that I should expect to wait about 90 minutes before I could be examined. The literature that I had been given explained that because this was an A&E department patients wouldn't necessarily be seen on a ' first come first seen basis', this seemed very reasonable to me. The hospital was immaculately clean with good support services for waiting patients - cafe etc. I was impressed by an atmosphere of calm efficiency and sense of purpose by all the staff that I observed as they went about their work. After 60 minutes I was called to be prepared to be examined ( eye drops, etc ) and shortly afterwards I was examined by a doctor who asked me to describe what had happened. She thoroughly examined my eye and gave me a diagnosis. She asked about my circumstances ( was I able to return next day etc ) and then explained that she would like to refer me for a second opinion about treatment. She personally went to see her colleague who offered to see me later that morning. I was given a further detailed examination and she agreed that a laser treatment would prevent further damage to my retina. She explained that she wasn't able to do it there and then (!), but if I could be available before her morning list next morning she would di it then as it was a short procedure. This was an offer that I couldn't refuse and gratefully accepted. I duly returned and was treated and then given the necessary letters to have follow up examinations at home. I have had very good experiences in NHS hospitals beforehand but my treatment at Moorfields was outstanding. I was treated courteously and efficiently by a dedicated team of staff who all went about their tasks with commitment and dedication. I am extremely grateful to them all.
