"Patient in pain & distress, treated with flippant..."
I am a highly educated individual with relatively high pain threshold and not prone to hysterics or amateur dramatics. After an incident en route to the office, I was advised by the local GP to take myself to the nearest A&E to be looked at. I went to St Charles in Ladbroke Grove- and my high esteem towards the NHS took a battering in the A&E equivalent (Urgent Care?) department. I was in acute pain, distress & confusion. I was articulate in describing the pain (symptoms, location etc), the incident which caused it and even responded with questions about potential treatments. In return, I was met with condescending and flippant remarks by the person who examined me- (nurse/doctor?)- her remarks include: (1) "Well we're not in Daily Mail territory here!" - when I asked if it was possible that my body was in shock (I was shivering & shaking inside) (2) "Why are you opening and closing your eyes like that!" - when I was trying to cope with the throbbing pain, breathing calmly and opening/closing my eyes helped me cope (3) "Well you see kids come in here all the time bawling their eyes out"- when I gently apologised for my eyes brimming with tears (I was in pain) I do not know if it was her standard operating procedure of dealing with new patients (i.e. be flippant and treat them all like stuttering idiots) but I left the department later feeling a wave of anger intermittently switching places with the throbbing pain. As the swelling slowly subsides I feel that I owe it to other patients to write this review. I realise that nothing will be done and nothing will come out of this (well, I doubt very much... perhaps I'm mistaken). Patients just want to be treated like a normal human being- we want to go in and out with minimal fuss, preferably feeling much better than we did when we walked in to see you. We know that everyone leads busy lives (NHS- we salute you) but the person who dealt with me needs to have a refresher course in patient care. With regret.
