My daughter had to have some teeth out, because she has special needs. it had to be done under general anesthetic and not at her dentist at Moor St.
This is the second time she has had to have this, but this time they were big teeth. She is nine and does not talk, she has developmental delay. We took her to the Treatment Centre on 6th August. A very friendly nurse took us through to do the checks and then the anesthetist and the dentist came to say hello and check things.
They let her go in first so that she wasn't hanging around too long, she hadn't been able to eat or drink since the night before and she is a hungry girl plus there was less time to get anxious, for her and us! They have a very kind lady who is a play leader and she came to say hello and came to the theatre with us. She remembered my daughter from the previous visit. Last time having the mask on was very traumatic and my daughter really fought it but this time she was calmer.
We were taken to the waiting area and shown where to make a drink and told where our daughter would come out to.
When she came out she was calmer than last time too and the nurses had given her a blanket because she was a bit cool. She woke up slowly and we made sure she stayed on the bed this time. Last time she got up a bit quickly.
All the staff are friendly and warm and spoke to my daughter kindly and asked her if it was ok to take her blood pressure and her temperature. They gave her a little teddy when she came out of theatre that she could keep. When she had had a little drink and seemed more with it we moved to the waiting area for a while before we left.
The staff all told my daughter how well she had done and we were given information about how to look after her and the number for the children's ward at Worcester which was very reassuring if we were worried. They gave her a note for the tooth fairy. All these little things add up to a good experience. We really appreciate that they let her go in first as waiting around would have made the whole thing harder.
