"arrived in A and E with a fracture of the left..."

About: Weston General Hospital

I received excellent care in the A&E and was provided with an appointment to see the Orthopaedic surgeon the following day. After review and a new plaster cast I agreed with the surgeon that I would need to have a plate within the next two weeks. I received a date for the operation within the week and when I explained that I was allergic to nickel they immediately ordered the appropriate titanium plate and screws. The procedure took place on Tuesday eleven days after the injury, well within the two week period. The care I received was excellent except for two episodes. The first was the lack of a bed for me to move out of recovery ward, I spent two hours in there wide awake. I had not been sedated and only had a spinal anaesthetic so the waiting was extremely tedious. However once I was moved to the overflow ward Cheddar for Hutton I was able to settle down for the night. I had a rough night and was delighted when the Surgeon agreed to allow me home with pain relief. We moved to the Discharge Unit and waited for the TTOs. We waited for almost four hours, by which time I was in agony as my medications had worn off by then. I think it is wrong to allow the pharmacy to provide such a poor service when everyone else is working hard. I am not alone in this complaint and it leaves a very poor impression of the hospital, primacy recency effect.
