My mother (an acute stroke patient) has arrived on the Fairoak ward, which is described as being understaffed in the evening from the Wentworth Ward and Adwick Ward in the Montagu Hospital in Mexborough South Yorkshire. At the weekends these wards seemed to be understaffed too but the care and facilities of the NHS nursing staff have been very good and have enabled my mother to survive a severe stroke, improve her swallowing using a PEG to the stomach and allow for movement to a chair location which helps with her cardiovascular sysytem. She is a strong willed lady, quite stoic and like many elderly people, patient and accepting her pain at times with her changed lifestyle. Inactivity to her left side is causing this pain and the nurse and physio staff are working hard to improve upon this weakness. Let's hope Fairoak ward can continue the good work of the NHS in times that these elderly patients feel confused and affected by the damaging effects of stroke.
