"Where's the care?"

About: Broomfield Hospital

Recent experience on Stock ward left me feeling disappointed. I was obviously pleased that the skill of the surgeon managed to repair my injury, but there was a total lack of professionalism and caring. On arrival to mayflower I was told to sit and wait in the waiting room. I had a nasty injury and was in a lot of pain, 2 hours went by and no one had even seen to me. When I asked for something for the pain I was told I couldn't have anything as the Dr hadn't seen me yet. Consultant was great and prescribed the pain relief immediately before he even started to examine me and ensured this was given straight away. I was admitted for surgery the next day and taken to Stock ward. Overnight no one came into my room after bringing me some toast at 11pm, until 05:45 the next morning. I walked out and found a nurse at 03:00 and asked for pain relief, to be told "your nurse is on break I'll let her know". This didn't happen, so I didn't get anything until someone came in at 05:45. Staff arrived to take me to theatre but necessary preparation hadn't occurred so this was delayed. During my surgerry, i was awake as this was done under local, whilst carrying out the repairs required, the surgeon was on the phone. i appreciate that this is an emergency service and decisions have to be made, but surely someone could have nade a decison then had this verified once the operation was complete. When I got back from theatre, I was allowed to eat, but this was put in front of me and left there, even though my injury was to my hand and I had no way of cutting it up, so I gave up. I consequently had nothing to eat after 11pm the previous evening until i got home at about 4pm the following day. A coupe of the nurses were lovely and this review is not a reflection on all of the staff, but the whole experience left me hoping I never have to go there again. The worry is I have to return for further surgery. At least I know what to expect.

Thank you for the account of your experience with us. Whilst we do have some positives in the account there are improvements to be made so have forwarded on to Senior Sister and the Clinical Director to look into those regarding the ward and surgery respectively.
