"Beds in A&E"

About: New Cross Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I visited my GP that evening with unbearable pain in my lower back. Had lost urinary function and numbness in both legs! GP sent me straight to hospital I informed receptionist of GP's instructions upon arrival (possible trapped spinal cord prolapse of disk need to be seen urgently due to loss of urinary function).

I was assessed by nurse within ten mins she could see I was in terrible pain and discomfort. She left the room after stating you need help right away I'll see if a cubicle or bed is free. She came back only to tell me there was no room I'd have to wait outside in the waiting area.

The waiting area was full no seats I then stood for nearly 2 hours in tremendous pain without any pain relief or further assistance while people with minor sprains and cuts were dealt with. My wife asked a passing nurse if there was anywhere I could lie down while I waited.

The nurse pointed at a low metal bench in a side corridor and said that's all we have and you'll be waiting for at least another 2 hours.

At that point I gave up I couldn't stand any longer due to the pain I was in the thought of lying on a low metal bench with a back injury totally seemed wrong and not the care or help I was looking for. So I had no option I gave up and left the department.

My GP contacted me the next morning as he was so concerned to see how I was when I told him what had happened he was shocked. I was seen again by him within hours. Now on strong pain killers and muscle relaxants awaiting further referral by GP.
