"My experience in the orthopaedic department"

About: Tameside General Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I have been under orthopedic department on and off for 26 years. I have seen many dr's during my time scale who have all done a fantastic job.

I am currently under another doctor who I have seen before and is a great dr, but due to unseen circumstances the doctor is not their so I have been seeing another doctor, who has got a horrible bedside manner, is very sarcastic and very rude.

This doctor diagnosed me with degenerative arthritis, told me I was at the end of the line. I asked what my outcome would be and the doctor replied by saying I haven't got a crystal ball I cant see into future, I asked if I could have a maci operation to fix the problem as I previously had, the doctor said I am not god you know. I wish I was. Also the doctor said how many times have I gotta tell you, we don't do the maci here. I said I know that but tameside referred me to another hospital last time for it so I was just wondering if that would fix the problem. The doctor said like I told you I cant look into future.

I also asked the doctor where my cartilage has gone again- is it in the same place as my previous surgery? The reply- how would I know I didn't do the previous surgery and I haven't read your notes. Bare in mind this was at my pre-op assessment so this doctorr was going to operate on me even though they hadn't read my notes.

I then received a letter to say the doctor had cancelled my operation. I went to pals about it all and I received an apology from the doctor for cancelling my op, the letter got typed wrong, I was still on the list and sorry for the confusion.

Because the doctor has apologised for the miss typed letter the case is shut.

I phoned pals and said its not acceptable for the doctor to just apologise for cancelling my surgery, what about a surgeon saying they are not god and hasnt read my notes etc.

The reply - It has been investigated. I emailed PALS 1 week ago now saying I wanted to speak to someone face to face about the issues I am raising. I have had no response, so I can only assume tameside think its perfectly acceptable for a doctor to behave in this manner and not read patients notes and treat patients the way they do. I am livid that they are letting a doctor bring down the orthopaedic dept which for many years has helped me with my knee

I am sorry that your experience during your visit was not satisfactory. This is certainly not the standard of care we expect for our patients. I understand you are still in contact with the Pals team and they are re-looking at the issues you have raised and we endeavour to resolve your on-going issues.

Thank you again

Director of Nursing
