"Never Again"

About: Derriford Hospital

I was sent to Derriford because the condition I had required skin grafting. I am disabled and have to have a carer with me at all times. On the day of the surgery I was told I was 2nd on the list (previously I had explained that I am in a wheelchair and cannot sit in an upright position for too long or I get extreme pain in my back, also I travel from central Cornwall and it is a long way to travel back) I was left sitting for approx. 5 hours and at no time did anyone approach to let me know what the delay was. When I asked I was made to feel like I was a problem. After the surgery I realized that a splint which I had been told would be fitted had not been but I was woken and sent home with great haste. 4 days later I returned to let the specialised nurse to check the wound. Not only did the nurse check it but the nurse went on to remove all the stitches...After 4 days!!! Within 24 hours the wound developed a horrendous infection. I had to be taken to out of hours doctors and more antibiotics which did nothing. My own doctors surgery nurses helped all they could cleaning it daily and getting special wound dressings in - one part developed a deep hole that had to be packed and my main carer also had to help change and clean the wound. I rang and told Derriford and made an apt for me to come in. I made it quite clear that I wanted to see a doctor and not the nurse that had taken out the stitches. I had an appt time and yet when I got there no-one seemed to know anything about it and I was left sitting for hours until I was told to go somewhere else. I knew that was where the nurse was and again told them I wanted to see a doctor. They insisted that a doctor would be there to see me... Guess what?? no doctor and I was wheeled in to see the nurse who told me nothing was really wrong and sent me home. I continued to receive help from my doctors until it eventually healed leaving a very unsightly scar and adhered skin and tissue which restricts the movement of that arm. I returned in January for a review and to make an apt to have the other arm done with the same operation. The doctor ignored my problems and questions about the arm but did say that a repair operation may have to be done before they did the other arm. I was told that I had to put lots of cream on it and massage it and she would arrange a further appt. in 3 months. Guess What??? I have heard nothing from them at all!!!!! apart from the pain I have had to pay for all the extra hours my carer has had to do and all the extra mileage. I do need the other arm doing but go back to Derriford....NEVER.
