"They have boosted my confidence tenfold"

About: Hawtonville Children's Centre

(as a parent/guardian),

After having my first child in 2010 I was diagnosed with post natal depression. It was recommended to me that I visit the local surestart centre (Hawtonville and Balderton Children's Centre). It was there that I was made to feel so welcome I felt able to communicate with staff and other parents which I believe greatly helped in my recovery.

They have boosted my confidence tenfold. They have given me great opportunities to further myself. I got involved in parent forums there. I now take the minutes for those meetings, I'm also secretary for a constitution group myself and other parents set up. I attended adult learning courses and volunteering courses. To the stage that I am now an admin and reception volunteer and sit at the front desk speaking to people. Something I never thought id be able to do again. I am now expecting my second child and still volunteering at the Hawtonville and Balderton Children's Centre, the support from staff is invaluable. The opportunities I've been given I could not be more grateful for.

During my worst moments the centre provided a place where my child was safely cared for whilst I gained skills and confidence and remembered what it was like to be a person again. My daughter has also gained greatly from the centre. She has made friends, found her personality and most importantly she has had fun.

Dear Hawtonvillemum

Thank you for sharing your journey with us. It is great to see the positive impact the various staff of the children centre have contributed to you and your child’s development. I am very impressed by your commitment as a volunteer with a young child, even now you are pregnant and in such a frontline position. It really helps the confidence of new parents and carers who come through the door to see a friendly face who knows the local community and is supporting the work of the centre. I wish you every success in the birth of your next child and look forward to seeing you on the front desk when I pop in

Kind regards

Karon Foulkes
