"Excellent Endoscopy procedure in Day Care unit"

About: Darent Valley Hospital

Had a colonoscopy on 23rd June. Excellent service from the day care unit staff - nurses outstanding in their care and explanation, I was made to feel at ease. Doctor performing the procedure was superb. Good communication and teamwork between the nurses and other staff. My only negatives would be - sharing a 6 bed 'ward' with both sexes was a little embarrassing; conducting discussion with nurse about intimate details with only a curtain for privacy was again embarrassing as I could overhear other patients' conversations and therefore they could overhear mine; part of the procedure (having a tube inserted in my nostril) was not mentioned before and came as a surprise; and a noticeable gap between the toilet door and door frame let me see outside while on the loo! All in all, the NHS staff and their conduct that day made me proud of the NHS.

Response from Darent Valley Hospital

Dear Steve Thank you for taking the time to write about how excellent our doctors and nurses were during your stay on the Day Care Unit. We were sorry to read that you were placed in a mixed sex area during your stay. Our expectation is to implement single sex sleeping accommodation whenever possible and clinically safe to do so. However, we fully appreciate that it is not easy and dignifying to share a common space with the opposite gender especially when we are not feeling our best and apologise if you found this embarrassing. We will also investigate the toilet door you have mentioned. With best wishes for a speedy recovery. The Communication Team Darent Valley Hospital
