"A&E is Freezing! Ward 20 Amazing!"

About: Wexham Park Hospital

I'm still an inpatient on ward 20 but late tue night I got transferred here from St Thomas's Hosp near Chobham. When we first went into AE the waiting room was freezing as the air con was blasting out. On commenting to a nurse she said "it keeps people from coming in but did also agree it was very cold. Later I was moved into resus and horrified to find this even colder from the air con. All the patients and nurses were complaining. Apparently the people that hold the key to be able to adjust the aircon only work days so as the temp drops at night it becomes increasingly worse. Again all staff and patients were complaining. There was a man with no top on as he was having ECG's etc and the lady next to me was recovering from cardiac arrest. Myself had 4 blankets, my hoody hood up and was bitterly cold. I have worked 15 years as an emergency ambulance technician in Nottingham which is where I'm from and I have never ever experienced such cold in an environment where there are such people. In the end I walked out of resus in the search for a warmer place. I was put in a cubicle in another part but again was freezing as I was right next to the same aircon system. Ironically the toilets were beautifully warm. Once getting to the ward it took me hours to warm up (and I'm only 41-imagine the older people). This needs to be taken seriously immediately. People can easily become hypothermic in these temperatures. I am so not exaggerating!!! As for ward 20 the staff were totally amazing!! The were professional and their care outstanding. Their techniques for cleanliness and prevention of cross contamination with patient contact is second to none. As mentioned I'm not from round here and was very scared. I shouldn't have been. From the cleaners to nurses and doctors (plastics) and anyone else I've missed out were and still are amazing and I cannot thank them enough. Without contradicting myself I can't wait to get out of here and get home but a total thumbs up to each and every one of you. Carolyn x

Dear Carolyn Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback even though you are still with us as a patient. I will forward your comments straight away to Mike Hatton, Deputy Director of Estates and Facilities and Angela Ballard, Associate Director of Nursing so that we make sure the temperature in A&E is appropriate for the time and conditions. I am sorry that you experienced such a cold department. I am delighted to hear that the care on Ward 20 is outstanding and I shall send your comments to the Ward Matron, head of housekeeping and to the Plastics team doctors. I wish you well in your continued recovery Kind Regards Claire Marshall Associate Director of Patient Experience and Public Involvement
