"Excellent care at Childrens A&E but tigerish parking at Leicester Royal Infirmary"

About: East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust / Emergency ambulance Leicester Royal Infirmary / Accident and emergency Leicester Royal Infirmary / Paediatrics Leicester Royal Infirmary / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a parent/guardian),

Mt daughter recently dislocated her knee during a school sports lesson and had to be taken to hospital by ambulance. The care she received in the children's A&E dept was excellent. It did take a long time (admitted at about 10am and discharged at about 4pm) but she did have to have X-rays and a full leg plaster cast during that time so not too bad. The follow up appointments with the fracture clinic were generated automatically and also went well. My only gripe, and it is a big one, was that the parking situation was hideous and, to be honest, unacceptable. There is only one thing worse than receiving a telephone call to say that your child has been rushed to hospital in an ambulance and that is to rush there to find that there is nowhere to park. I tried 4 car parks including the leicester tigers car park and still couldn't find a space. I was in an absolute panic by that point since it had already taken me 45 mins to try to park. Knowing that my daughter was in pain and not being able to be there with her was not a pleasant experience. Eventually I resorted to parking in the Shires/Highcross and ran all the way to the hospital. Not an experience I'd like to have to repeat under the circumstances.

Dear Looptheloop,

Thank you for taking the time to review you/your Daughter’s experience of Leicester’s Hospitals. We are very pleased to read that the care she received was excellent and have passed this onto the Children’s A&E department to share with the team.

We are however, incredibly sorry about the lack of parking options for you on the day and can only apologise that there was nothing available for you in that already stressful and upsetting situation. We are continually trying to improve travel and car parking options for our patients and their visitors, including plans to build a new multi-storey car park along with the new Emergency Floor, as well as partnerships with local car parks such as NCP. As I’m sure you can appreciate, with travel congestion ever increasing, as well as the number of patients and visitors we see at our hospitals, we do our best to provide as much city centre parking as possible.

Further information about alternative travel options can be found on http://www.leicestershospitals.nhs.uk/patients/getting-to-hospital/leicester-royal-infirmary/car-travel-and-parking/

Best wishes
